Lead Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

Under the direction of the Cardiopulmonary Director, the Lead Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing clinical respiratory and cardiopulmonary procedures and training for patients according to defined policies and procedures of the department and the hospital. He or she is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the needs of the patient.  This position also entails the responsibilities of chart auditing, assisting the Director in conducting employee competencies, assisting the Director in conducting and completing employee evaluations, staffing, assisting the Director in completing Department Orientations and assisting in the preparation of any regulatory agency inspections. 

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Evaluates the needs of the patients by completing and educating the staff on Admission Assessment and Evaluation of Therapy Documentation.
  • Instructs patients and their families concerning proper tracheal and bronchial hygiene including postural drainage, percussion and breathing exercises.
  • Responds to all emergency situations to assist physician and nursing staff in evaluating the patient’s immediate respiratory needs. Institutes emergency respiratory care procedures to include CPR, airway management and assists in endotracheal intubation (adult and geriatric).
  • Provides routine respiratory therapy treatments or medical gases as ordered and directed by the physician.
  • Utilizes patient care plan and evaluation therapy documentation to notify nurse and/or physician or patient responses to order therapy.
  • Maintains and instructs on the appropriate written records of all respiratory care treatments and interventions.
  • Performs arterial punctures, blood gas analysis and EKG’s as ordered and signs off on new employees. 
  • Prepares equipment and supplies for respiratory therapy treatments.  Demonstrates sterile techniques.
  • Transports, changes and ensures adequate medical gas supplies / cylinders throughout hospital areas.
  • Receives, documents and implements telephone and/or verbal physician orders for routine respiratory care therapy according to departmental and hospital policy and procedure.


Minimum Education: Requires completion of an approved Respiratory Care program or its equivalent training and experience resulting in certification eligibility. 

Minimum Experience: Previous experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner Supervisor in an acute / LTAC hospital setting preferred. 

Req. Certification/Licensure: Current Respiratory Care Practitioner license in the State of California. Registered, certified or certified eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Care Current Basic Life Support BLS, ACLS, PALS certification issued by AHA.
